500 ml

Described as strong and pale, this American hoppy IPA is 5.5% ABV and a great ale to enjoy straight from the bottle.

Butts Pale Ale is named after the local quarry and address of our Ashover Brewery, but is also a name used to describe a particular size barrel.

The quarry closed officially closed in January 1950. Since then, the large open quarry with a flat, overgrown floor has been the focus of fossil hunters. You can also find several minerals including fluorite, galena and calcite. More recently it has been the home of a motorsport track off-road facility

In case you were wondering…

The term “Pale Ale” was first introduced in 1703 when beers made from malts dried with high carbon coke resulted in a lighter colour. Especially so for beers that were popular in this time.

High carbon coke was first used for dry roasting malt way back in 1642. By 1784, advertisements were boasting of such “Pale Ale”. By 1830, the terms “bitter” and “pale ale” were used alike. Although Breweries preferred the term “pale ale” for designating beers, customers would almost always use the term “bitter” to address the same beers so that there would be greater differentiation from the other hopped beers that were poplar in this time. American Pale Ale was first developed in 1980 and West Coast variations soon followed.
